Aisthesis (pronounced like “eyes they sees”) means
perception from the senses - feeling seeing hearing, etc. -
as well as the intellect, and the combination of which
results in moral discernment on ethical matters

Lydia Underwood sought to give her studio a name that would value the gift of sensitivity - a name that would indicate how both emotional and intellectual intelligence are necessary to make our world a better place to live.

Always a creative and conscientious person, Lydia Underwood began studious training in the arts in childhood. She was privileged to grow up watching her father build his architecture firm, and she had the unusual opportunity to take harp lessons from a gifted instructor. From an early age she knew she wanted to be an Interior Designer, and she dreamed of one day opening her own studio. After receiving a full scholarship to the University of Louisville through academics, music, and art, she earned degrees in Interior Architecture and Harp Performance.

Graduating during the recession, the first job she landed was cashiering at a super market (so she has experienced first-hand what it is like to struggle even in a first world country being paid less than a living wage). Thankfully through effort and favor her circumstances changed. In 2014 she began working at a boutique interior design firm (LYNE, LLC) specializing in hospitality where she enjoyed 8 wonderful years and realized her dream of becoming an indispensable part of a design firm. There Lydia contributed to projects such as the Parke West in Nashville, Dream Hotel Nashville, and Westhaven Residents Club in Franklin. Although Lydia loved working at Lyne, the dream of Aisthesis Studio kept growing until she finally made the leap to launch it in 2023.

Lydia founded Aisthesis Studio to provide an ethical alternative to traditional interiors where beauty extends beyond the surface to the source because she believes that beauty should be more than skin deep. She loves to reinterpret historic elements within a new context and combine soft modern elements with preloved designer pieces to create timeless, intimate interiors that feel good inside and out. Lydia Is a Registered Interior Designer with the state of Tennessee, registration no. 1323.

Like many creative people Lydia has additional artistic outlets. She still regularly enjoys playing the harp as she finds it therapeutic, stress-relieving and emotive - find out more here. And in her free time, you will often find her working with her hands to make something new out of something old - find out more here.
